Knowing that they almost certainly needed a victory to secure the Southern Athletics League title, Brighton and Hove took a big team for their match against hosts Stevenage, Norwich and Croydon.

On a day of surprisingly warm sunshine-the forecast had been average at best-punctuated by two biblical downpours Brighton secured victory comfortably in a match that was a tight three way tussle at the half way point.

Brighton used their strength in depth to great effect fielding two athletes in every event bar one and their team spirit was evident in the vociferous support given from the sidelines from the starter’s first pistol to the last discus thrown.

Stephen Strikes Silver, Katie leaps to Bronze plus a Sussex Senior Womens' Relay Record

Stephen Ferroni added a silver medal to his ever-expanding trophy cabinet with a fantastic run in the Inter Boys 3000m. He battled down the home straight on the heels of arch rival Ben Dijkstra to cross the line in a time of 8:42.48. It is all the more remarkable that this was only Stephen's second track race of the year. In his first in May, he qualified for the schools' with his PB time of 8:37.3. Stephen's success has earned him a second international vest in the Home Counties International at Cardiff this weekend.

Multi Eventer, Katie Garland pulled out all the stops to jump a personal best of 5.66m for third place in the Senior Girls' Long Jump. Unfortunately Katie pulled a hamstring during the competition and had to withdraw but had done enough to secure her medal. Katie's injury meant the 4x100 Senior Girls Relay team was depleted for the final where they came 7th. However in their earlier heat, the original line up of Holly Turner, Katie, Anna Short and Bethany Close had set a Sussex Senior/ U20 and B&H club record of 47.98 secs.

In perfect conditions 32 of our Under 13 athletes competed in the Sussex championships held in the beautiful Withdean Stadium. They won a total of 22 medals, six golds, eight silvers and eight bronzes. Added to this were many personal bests and a fantastic  crowd supporting all the athletes.

Pride of place goes to Danny Ross-Horton, who not only won three golds, but had three personal bests in the 75msprint, Javelin and long jump where his 4.82m was just short of the CBP, showing his all round ability. Danny also  anchored the relay team of Jamie Arnold, Dominic Pay and Adam Firsht to 3rd place in the relay.

The youngest section of the club had a bumper day at their Champs held at Withdean in conjunction with the U13 Championships. With a total of 24 athletes out of 76 competitors, we were assured a sea of red and black, and the performances ensured that we had a large contingent battling for medals.

The boys started on the grass with the Howler throw, where our Harrison George threw an incredible 38.16 (76 points) to lead after the first event with Sam Duncan on 70 points (35.34m). The girls were up on the plateau for the Standing Long Jump where both pools produced a longest jump by a Brighton & Hove athlete with Ruby Anning jumping 1.96 (57) and Blossom Campbell 1.99 (58 points) to the fore.

Brighton at the British Championships

The British Championships are the highest level of competition in the UK and athletes who are performing at the top level are invited.  Over the last few years there has been a low level of representation from Brighton and Hove Club.  This year 7 athletes from the Brighton & Hove City Athletic Club were invited; sadly Holly Turner and Matt Hewitt were unable to compete due to injury but the other 5 represented the club at this major event.

Will Gray continued his string of top performances and pulled out the best yet at this event coming 4th in a new pb knocking 4 seconds off his previous best.  A superb performance in a class field.

Anna Short is only a first year u20 athlete and was asked to compete with the likes of Jodie Williams in the 100m. She performed well and although she did not progress to the semi finals she did run very close to per pb.

There were 3 hurdlers who all found the step up to this level very challenging; Gwilym Cooper ran in the 400 hurdles and his very fast first 200 was his undoing as he found the second half of the raced very difficult but still ran well below 55 seconds.

Both Beth Close (u20) and Peter Moreno ran in the sprint hurdles but sadly both clipped the first hurdle and at this level of competition any error takes you out of contention.  Remarkably Peter ran 15.16 sec even though he hit a further 6 hurdles.

All these athletes are easily capable of performing at this or higher level for next year - we need more to join them.

Following the regional championships last week, competition moved up a step for U20 and U23 athletes. This weekend was the National Championships including the World Championship trials. Brighton and Hove sent four athletes to this competition with mixed results.

Will Gray took pride of place winning gold in the 3000m SC - a very exciting race with the winning margin only fractions of a second - more familiar to sprinters than middle distance runners.

The first U13/U15 Youth Development League match was held in perfect sunny conditions at the Julie Rose stadium at Ashford in Kent. Unfortunately the starter failed to show up, so the track races were started with a whistle which means the times are not eligible for rankings.
