The biggest annual cross-country event - the English National Championships - was held at Parliament Hill London last Saturday.

It was a cold and sunny afternoon but the 35 Brighton youngsters who made the journey experienced a day to remember. Cross Country is the only event in which you can be rubbing shoulders literally with the best runners in the country. Despite several missing from the original club entries there were numerous excellent individual and team performances.

First to enter the record books, to equal an existing mark which has survived for 10 years and to better his lifetime best, was Harry Reinecker-Found jumping 2.00m in the Under 17 High Jump.

The other CBP was in the last event of the weekend, the Under 17 men's Triple Jump, where Louis Goffin exceeded the old record (12.26) in each of his four valid jumps. The first of these was his best at 12.75 - just 1 cm below his pb.

There were plenty of other good performances on the first of two days of the Championships, held as usual jointly with Surrey. This year the fields include almost 50 more athletes than last year and certainly the largest number in the past five years. Best supported of Saturday’s events was the under 15 Girl's 60m, requiring five heats and semi finals to get to the final, where Ruby Anning successfully defended her title winning in 8.09secs.

This is an important announcement to inform all Sussex athletics clubs that there will be an Officials Course at the Lewes track on Sunday 18 March 2018.

This will cover all four track and field disciplines of starter/marksman, timekeeper, track judge and field judge commencing at 10.00 am and continuing until about 3.30 pm.

It is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE that all clubs do all they possibly can to increase the number of qualified officials we have here in Sussex.

Every track club in the county needs to increase the number of qualified officials among its members.

If anyone wants to discuss the requirements they are welcome to call John Gill on 01444 458953. Clubs often pay for you to attend the course. Speak to your club secretary.

On a cold and damp day the Southern cross country championships were held in Stanmer park and the Brighton youngsters produced their best ever results in this event.

It was great to see so many youngsters who were running in this event for the first time against the best teams in the south and in big fields with up to 260 and many have another year in their age group.
